Gone Forward

one step, then another, closer now,

but the voice responds with the chorus

that’s all too familiar now for his small ears;

with his small fingers on his small hands,

he reaches from his gut

another mask for his small face;

faceless, no, but neither fearless yet,

because he’s already accustomed to tune but still struggling to listen;

carefully he makes the second step,

then he leaps, boldly, as the notes reverberate in his small bones;

outside, silence dominates and wishes to creep into the small body,

but the voice does not allow so;

two steps back, farther now.
